I’m always looking for ways to improve my writing, but I’ve never been able to find an easy way to learn idioms. Most of the sites I’ve found are too difficult for beginners or just don’t work very well.
STEP 1: Watch American TV
I know there’s a lot of debate about whether or not it’s a good idea to watch American television, but it’s a great way to learn English idioms. You can find idioms and wordplay in TV shows like Seinfeld, Friends, Will & Grace, and many others. The problem is that you’ll often have to look through dozens of episodes to find anything useful.
STEP 2: Read American Books
American books have the same problem as American TV – it’s hard to find idiomatic content. Some books are written to sound more natural, but you’ll still have to search through hundreds of pages to find something useful.
STEP 3: Watch American Movies
This is probably the best way to learn idioms and wordplay. Since Hollywood tends to be the most popular movie genre in the U.S., there’s a high chance you’ll find useful content in a lot of movies.
STEP 4: Listen to American Music
While this isn’t the best way to learn idioms, it can be a great way to learn about American culture. You’ll hear a lot of idioms from pop songs and music videos.
STEP 5: Read American Websites
This is a great way to learn idioms from American websites. You’ll find some useful content on many sites that are geared toward the U.S. market.
